JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – The United States has publicly rejected Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz’s declaration that Israeli troops will remain in southern Lebanon for the long term, exposing a widening disagreement between Washington and Jerusalem over how to secure Israel’s northern border.
Katz, speaking during a visit to Israeli forces operating in Lebanese border villages, said the Israel Defense Forces were preparing operationally and logistically for an extended deployment aimed at eliminating Hezbollah tunnels, weapons positions, and other terrorist infrastructure.
“As the Prime Minister and I clarified unequivocally, we are not withdrawing from this security zone,” Katz said, arguing that Israel’s military presence is necessary to prevent another large-scale cross-border assault similar to Hamas’ October 7 attack.
A U.S. State Department official, however, said a permanent Israeli military presence would violate the security framework previously agreed upon by Israel, Lebanon, and the United States.
Washington maintains that the agreement provides for a conditions-based Israeli redeployment as Hezbollah is verifiably disarmed and its military infrastructure dismantled. The Lebanese Armed Forces are reportedly beginning implementation in designated pilot areas.
The dispute highlights a fundamental question confronting Israel after years of Iranian-backed Hezbollah entrenchment along its northern frontier: whether international agreements and Lebanese forces can provide sufficient security, or whether the IDF must physically hold strategic territory to prevent terrorist organizations from rebuilding.
Katz indicated Israel has chosen the latter course, saying the lesson of October 7 is that Israeli forces must remain positioned where they can stop attacks before they reach Israeli communities.
