Renewed attacks threaten to shatter years of relative calm between Riyadh and the Iran-backed terrorist organization

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (Worthy News) – Saudi-led forces carried out overnight airstrikes against Yemen’s northwestern Saada province after the Iran-backed Houthi terrorist organization launched ballistic missiles and drones toward an international airport and military installations inside Saudi Arabia.
The strikes targeted areas in Saada, the mountainous province regarded as the principal stronghold of Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, according to reports from Yemen.
The Saudi operation followed a sharp escalation Monday in which Houthi forces attacked Abha International Airport, King Khalid Air Base, and Prince Sultan Air Base using ballistic missiles and unmanned aircraft.
Saudi air defenses intercepted the incoming threats over the kingdom’s southern region, according to the Saudi-led military coalition. No major casualties were reported.
The violence erupted after forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government struck the runway at Houthi-controlled Sanaa International Airport. Yemen’s Defense Ministry said the operation was intended to prevent an Iranian aircraft carrying a Houthi delegation from landing in violation of the country’s sovereignty.
The aircraft was reportedly forced to divert to another Houthi-controlled airport.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree subsequently declared that the period of de-escalation with Saudi Arabia had ended, signaling that the terrorist organization could resume sustained cross-border attacks against the kingdom.
The exchange represents one of the most serious confrontations between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since a United Nations-brokered truce sharply reduced hostilities in April 2022.
That agreement halted most cross-border attacks, permitted limited commercial flights from Sanaa, and eased restrictions on fuel shipments entering through Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hodeidah.
Although the formal truce expired in October 2022, Saudi Arabia and the Houthis largely maintained an unofficial ceasefire for nearly four years. The latest missile attacks and Saudi strikes now threaten to pull Yemen back into a devastating conflict that has already claimed countless lives and deepened one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The renewed fighting also comes amid a broader confrontation involving Iran and its regional proxies. Tehran has supplied the Houthis with weapons, technology, and military assistance, allowing the group to threaten Saudi territory, Israel, and commercial shipping routes through the Red Sea.
A return to full-scale war could destabilize the Arabian Peninsula while placing further pressure on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic maritime passage connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
