Iran Authorities Killed, Tortured, Raped Civilians Connected to Mahsa Amini Protests

(Worthy News) – A new report by United Nations investigators reveals that Iran’s rogue Islamic regime has murdered, tortured, and raped women, men and children connected to the nationwide mass protests triggered by the 2022 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who had been arrested for wearing her hijab incorrectly, the New York Times reports. The UN Human Rights Council is set to review the report this week.

Reporting to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the investigators said that as many as 551 people died at the hands of Iranian security forces engaged in a systematic and brutal crackdown on the protests, NYT said. Moreover, the UN report attests that at least nine young men were arrested on charges linked to the protests and were summarily executed without a fair trial. Several other people died after being tortured in custody.

Concerning the circumstances surrounding arrests, detentions, and interrogation by Tehran authorities, UN Deputy Human Rights Chief, Nada Al-Nashif, told the Human Rights Council: “There have been numerous allegations of torture and ill-treatment of individuals by security forces during arrest and interrogation to extract forced confessions as well as allegations of sexual and gender-based violence committed against women, men and children, especially in detention. Prison conditions, including denial of medical care, dire sanitary conditions, contaminated drinking water, and overcrowding, remain of concern.”

Specifically determining that children have been subjected to extreme violence by the Iranian regime, the investigators wrote: “As with adults, they were subjected to severe physical, psychological and sexual torture, including rape.”

“Many of the serious human rights violations outlined in the present report amount to crimes against humanity, specifically those of murder, imprisonment, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence, persecution, enforced disappearance, and other inhumane acts, that have been committed as part of a widespread and systematic attack directed against a civilian population,” the UN investigators said.
