AUKUS Successfully Integrate AI in Military Defense Test

by Karen Faulkner, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – In a further step toward integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in their defense systems, Australia, the UK, and the US (AUKUS) announced on Friday that they have successfully conducted a joint trial in “the first use of autonomy and AI sensing systems in a real-time military environment,” Breaking Defense (BD reports.

Breaking Defense reports that the trial was included in a US-hosted multinational Project Convergence Capstone 4 technology experimentation exercise earlier this year.

A part of broader AUKUS Resilient and Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Technologies (RAAIT) operations, the test involved uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) from each of the three partner countries assisting in the faster identification of enemy targets, Breaking Defense reports.

The drones were launched “together in the same airspace to achieve a common outcome while being augmented by an AUKUS AI team, which retrained and deployed AI onto the platforms,” the UK’s Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) said in the announcement.

According to DSTL, the test revealed a “seamless exchange of data and control” across AUKUS technologies, highlighting the three partners’ joint progress in adopting AI and autonomous systems, Breaking Defense reports.

While no timeframe was introduced, DSTL also announced that “once proven” AI and autonomous capabilities “will be incorporated onto national platforms, providing the military with operational advantage through a quicker response to current and future threats,” Breaking Defense said.

Supreme Court Refuses to Hear Religious Liberty Challenge on Same-Sex Marriage

In a disappointing setback for religious freedom advocates, the U.S. Supreme Court declined without comment to hear former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis’s appeal, leaving in place a $360,000 judgment against her for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The justices let stand lower court rulings that found she violated couples’ constitutional rights under the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision, despite what her legal team characterizes as a conflict with her First Amendment religious liberty rights.
