Israel Begins Flooding Hamas Tunnel Network With Seawater

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – Israel’s military has started the process of flooding Hamas’ tunnel network in Gaza with seawater to destroy the massive underground infrastructure the terrorist organization uses to wage war against Israel, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.

Although Israel’s military has not officially commented on the tunnel flooding operation, U.S. officials familiar with the situation, as the WSJ reported, have indicated that the operation is in its initial stages. Flooding the extensive underground network, which spans about 300 miles and includes reinforced blast doors, is expected to take several weeks.

According to U.S. officials who spoke with the WSJ, Israel recently added two additional pumps to the five installed last month.

Israeli officials have highlighted the critical role of Hamas’s underground tunnel network in their military operations. Hamas utilizes this labyrinth of tunnels for several strategic purposes: it facilitates the movement of fighters across the battlefield, serves as a storage location for rockets and munitions, and functions as a command and control center for their leaders.

Israeli authorities are exercising caution in the process of flooding the tunnels, mindful of the possibility that hostages might be held within these underground structures.

Certain officials within the Biden administration have expressed concerns about the effectiveness of using seawater in this operation and the potential risks it poses to Gaza’s freshwater supply.

In 2015, when Egypt employed a similar technique to flood tunnels used by smugglers under the Rafah border crossing with Gaza, it led to complaints from local farmers who reported damage to their crops.

Worthy News began covering Israel’s efforts to flood Hamas’ tunnel network in late November.
