Iranian-Backed Iraqi Militias Declare Halt to Actions Against Israel

(Worthy News) – Iranian-backed Iraqi militias have reportedly agreed to cease actions against Israel, according to the Hezbollah-affiliated newspaper Al-Akhbar.

The leader of the Iraqi Al-Nujaba movement, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, confirmed an agreement with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to refrain from interfering in Syrian affairs and monitor developments, including the policies of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump toward the Middle East and Iran.

Speaking to Al-Akhbar, the leader stated, “The factions have decided not to interfere in Syrian affairs and to monitor the situation from a distance while also awaiting the policy directions of US President-elect Donald Trump, particularly regarding the Middle East and Iran.”

The leader confirmed that the group would cease all military operations against Israel, stating, “The Islamic Republic of Iran gave us the freedom to decide regarding the Syrian scene and the control of the terrorist groups called Haya’at Tahrir al-Sham.”

Although less active than groups like Hezbollah, the Houthis, or Iran itself, Iraqi militias have carried out several drone and missile attacks on Israel since the war began. In September, they launched two drones targeting the city of Eilat. One was intercepted outside Israeli airspace, while the other struck a building in the city. The attack caused fires in the port and near Herod’s Hotel, with shrapnel lightly wounding two individuals.

Kazem al-Fartousi, spokesperson for the Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades, another Iranian-backed militia group in Iraq, told Al-Akhbar, “The operations of the factions against Israel were linked to Hezbollah’s operations in Lebanon. When a ceasefire was reached in Lebanon, the Iraqi factions also halted their operations. There are also partners in Iraq with reservations about these operations, and their perspectives must be considered.”

He further stated, “The situation is currently under review, and communication is ongoing among the resistance axis to coordinate positions and develop a unified vision.”
