Pro-Kremlin Blogger Turns on Putin, Reportedly Confined to Psychiatric Facility

(Worthy News) – A prominent pro-Kremlin blogger who once championed Russia’s war effort has dramatically reversed course—publicly denouncing President Vladimir Putin before reportedly being placed in psychiatric care, according to a report by Deutsche Welle.

Ilya Remeslo, a lawyer and former member of Russia’s Public Chamber, stunned followers on March 17 when he published a manifesto outlining “five reasons” why he no longer supports Putin. In the post, Remeslo described Russia’s war in Ukraine as “failing,” condemned censorship, and criticized what he called the erosion of free speech.

He went further, accusing Putin of clinging to power indefinitely and labeling his leadership illegitimate. “Putin must resign and be brought to justice as a war criminal and a thief,” Remeslo wrote, in a striking departure from his previous pro-government stance.

Within days of publishing the manifesto—and sharing videos insisting he remained in Russia and was prepared to face imprisonment—Remeslo reportedly disappeared from public communication. He is now believed to be held in St. Petersburg’s Psychiatric Hospital No. 3, though details surrounding his confinement remain unclear.

From Loyalist to Critic

Remeslo’s transformation is particularly notable given his past role as a staunch defender of the Kremlin. He was widely known as a “Z-blogger,” part of a group of vocal online supporters of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. He also played a significant role in legal actions against opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in prison in 2024.

In earlier remarks before his reported detention, Remeslo claimed his shift was the result of personal evolution and a new sense of purpose. He pointed to the failed 2023 uprising led by mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin as a turning point in his thinking, signaling cracks within Russia’s power structure.

Despite the risks, Remeslo said he would not flee the country and expressed hope for political change within Russia.

Sharp Backlash and Speculation

His sudden reversal triggered strong reactions from former allies and pro-government figures. Some questioned his mental state, while others suggested he had been coerced into making such statements.

State-aligned voices dismissed his criticism as destabilizing or opportunistic. Meanwhile, analysts noted that calling Putin a “war criminal” crossed a significant line that could prompt swift retaliation from authorities.

Political observers suggest Remeslo’s case may reflect broader undercurrents within Russian society. Growing war fatigue, economic strain, and declining public trust are contributing to subtle but increasing signs of dissent—even among former loyalists.

Echoes of the Past

Some experts believe Remeslo’s reported placement in psychiatric care may carry echoes of Soviet-era tactics, when dissenters were sometimes institutionalized rather than openly prosecuted.

The facility where he is believed to be held has a longstanding reputation in Russia for forensic psychiatric evaluations, raising concerns among human rights observers.

One political analyst described the situation as emblematic of a society under pressure, where even isolated expressions of dissent can trigger outsized reactions.

A Sign of Cracks Beneath the Surface?

While it remains unclear whether Remeslo acted independently or under external influence, his abrupt transformation—and subsequent disappearance—has intensified questions about internal stability within Russia.

What is clear is that even limited dissent from within pro-Kremlin circles is drawing swift and serious consequences, underscoring the tightening boundaries of acceptable discourse as the war in Ukraine continues.
