(Worthy News) – Israel and Jordan held secret talks on Friday to coordinate the situation in Syria, according to three Israeli officials cited by Axios.
The meeting included the director of Israel’s Shin Bet security agency and senior IDF officers, who met with Ahmad Husni, the head of Jordan’s general intelligence service, along with senior Jordanian military commanders.
Two Israeli officials told Axios that the talks focused on the situation in Syria, including both Israel’s and Jordan’s involvement with rebel groups now forming a transitional government.
According to an Israeli official, Jordan is playing a key mediating role between Israel and Syrian rebel groups, including Hayʼat Tahrir ash-Sham (HTS), the Sunni Islamist opposition group that led the revolution overthrowing the Assad regime.
Reportedly, the officials also discussed the increasing threat of Iranian weapons smuggling through Jordan to armed groups in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, a development that could significantly escalate violence in the region.
