(Worthy News) – On Monday, Iran announced the construction of a fourth nuclear research reactor in the central city of Isfahan, coming just days after revealing plans for a new nuclear power plant complex in the southern part of the country.
The Iranian State News Agency (IRNA) reported the initiation of construction for a new 10-megawatt “research reactor,” designed to fulfill multiple purposes such as testing fuel and nuclear materials, along with producing industrial radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals.
Iran’s nuclear program has faced international scrutiny, with external experts expressing concerns that its ultimate goal may be the development of nuclear weapons. However, Iran asserts that its intentions are purely peaceful and insists its nuclear activities are solely for civilian purposes.
Iran has been subject to a range of U.S. sanctions since Donald Trump’s 2018 decision to exit a 2015 international agreement. This deal was intended to curb Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions.
In January, Rafael Grossi, the director general of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported that Iran was “limiting” its cooperation with the agency, describing the situation regarding Iran’s nuclear program as “frustrating.”
Critics caution that Iran can enrich its substantial uranium stockpile to weapons-grade material rapidly, enabling the development of nuclear weapons, even though Iran publicly denies any intention of pursuing such weapons.
Yet, the credibility of these denials is eroded by the persistent calls from Iranian leaders for the “Death of Israel,” referring to it as the “Little Satan” and advocating for the destruction of the United States, labeling it as the “Great Satan.” Such rhetoric casts doubt on their declarations of pursuing a nuclear bomb.
