(Worthy News) – U.S. President-elect Donald J. Trump proclaimed Saturday on his Truth Social media platform the end of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s rule and suggested it was a moment of profound geopolitical change.
On Saturday, Trump posted on TruthSocial, “Opposition fighters in Syria, in an unprecedented move, have totally taken over numerous cities, in a highly coordinated offensive, and are now on the outskirts of Damascus, obviously preparing to make a very big move toward taking out Assad. Russia, because they are so tied up in Ukraine, and with the loss there of over 600,000 soldiers, seems incapable of stopping this literal march through Syria, a country they have protected for years.”
Trump’s post also referenced past U.S. policy, criticizing former President Barack Obama for failing to enforce the so-called “RED LINE IN THE SAND,” a reference to the Obama administration’s vow to respond to chemical weapons use in Syria.
According to Trump, Russia only gained influence in Syria due to that inaction, but now both Moscow and the Assad regime seem to be losing their grip on the country. “But now they are, like possibly Assad himself, being forced out, and it may actually be the best thing that can happen to them,” he wrote.
Trump’s statement called for American restraint. “Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!” he declared, urging the U.S. to avoid any direct role as the situation unfolds.
After the fall of Damascus, Trump posted again on Truth Social, “Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer. There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place,” Trump wrote.
He again tied Moscow’s withdrawal from Syria to its war in Ukraine, claiming that “close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever.”
According to the President-Elect, the developments left Russia and Iran weakened, while Ukraine, under President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was now inclined to “make a deal and stop the madness.”
Trump’s post also called for immediate diplomacy. “There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse,” he stated.
He further pressed for a prompt end to hostilities, warning that a failure to resolve these conflicts could spur an even more catastrophic escalation.
Despite the dramatic tone, it remains unclear how the Biden Administration will approach the evolving situation.
Trump’s message suggested he sees an opening for Russia’s Vladimir Putin to shift gears, noting, “I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!” His emphasis on international cooperation hinted at a potential diplomatic push once he assumes office.
While no official responses from Moscow, Tehran, or Damascus were immediately available, Trump’s remarks have already sparked worldwide debate. D
Diplomats and analysts are now closely watching for any signs that the Syrian regime’s downfall might prompt broader negotiations aimed at winding down multiple conflicts, including the devastating war in Ukraine.
